WASHINGTON: LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BACK YARD
Seattle homeowners are embracing a new city rule that allows cottages up to 800 sqft in area (not counting basements) to be built in back of homes on any lot larger than 4000 sqft, as long as the total footprint fills no more than 35% of the lot, reports the Seattle Times (“Backyard cottages sprouting in Seattle,” by Nancy Chaney). The city hopes the mini-homes, officially termed “detached accessory dwelling units,” will help increase urban density and provide affordable living space without major negative impacts on neighborhood character.

The negative impact of the "cottage" next to my backyard has been a complete eyesore, and it's been going on for about 3 to 4 years. Initially, the first over-sized "cottage" was only 3' from the property line and the new view from my back deck and house windows. The City finally issued a tear-down on that non-permitted monstrosity. The 2nd "cottage" built in exactly the same place has complied in size only--it still sits unfinished with Tyvek wrap and tar paper flying from the roof. The City has done nothing, and I have to live with this ugly "cottage" daily.

    Sounds like a decent idea.
